This globe-shaped ivory compass sundial from the British Museum, made about 1675-85 in Dieppe, France, is similar to the pocket sundial that Capt. John Smith used impress his Powhatan Indian captors in December 1607. He described his compass as a "round Ivory double compass Dyall... (a) Globe-like Jewell, (demonstrating) the roundness of the earth, and skies, the spheare of the Sunne, Moone, and Starres..."
