Sam Bush has played Hampton Roads a number of times over the years. Bela Fleck has made repeated stops here, as well. So, it makes sense than another veteran of the influential band New Grass Revival should pay us a visit: John Cowan.
He plays the Attucks Theatre in Norfolk 7:30 p.m. Saturday, part of the long-running Discovery Music Series.
Cowan, a soulful singer and steadfast bass man, leads his own band these days -- when he's not touring as bassist with the Doobie Brothers, a gig he nabbed back in 2010.
He's branching out in another direction, too. In March, WSM Radio in Nashville launched "John Cowan – I Believe To My Soul," a monthly show that features John interviewing and jamming with big names including Leon Russell, Bela Fleck, Rodney Crowell and Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues.
Cowan's most recent studio effort is "New Tattoo" from 2006. That disc includes a pair of songs written or co-written by his friend and frequent collaborator Darrell Scott, who is also set to play the Discovery Series.
Scott's show at the Attucks is Thursday, Nov. 15.
Completing the strange circle of alt-country happenings in Hampton Roads, Darrell Scott's friend and collaborator Tim O'Brien is scheduled to perform at Temple Israel in Norfolk on Sunday, Nov. 4.
Earlier this month, Scott and O'Brien released a sparkling live album "We're Usually a Lot Better Than This."Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
