EVMS received grant to offer certificate in medical Spanish

The Batten Educational Achievement Fund of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation has given almost $450,000 to establish a program at EVMS for a certificate program in medical Spanish.

The Spanish Bilingual Clinician Certification & Longitudinal Service Learning Program incorporates curriculum and testing recognized by the National Institutes of Health.

EVMS medical students have been given the first opportunity to participate in 2014/2015 academic year; after that it will be offered to resident physicians and Physician Assistant students. By 2017 it will be available to those pursuing health-related degrees at Hampton University, Norfolk State, Old Dominion University and Tidewater Community College.

Students who participate will learn about Hispanic cultures, health inequities, work with Spanish-speaking physicians, and visit areas with high concentrations of Spanish population.
