Counties complaining about unfunded state mandates ... here's your chance

Gloucester County officials, including school officials, have complained in recent years about the increase in unfunded mandates handed down from the state.

Something might -- emphasis on might -- be done about that. Gov. Bob McDonnell has created the "Governor's Task Force for Local Government Mandate Review," which surely drew a collective, "Woot! Woot!" from county, school, city and town officials near and far.

The creation of the five-member task force arose out of 2011 General Assembly legislation, said a state spokesman. The plan is to review state mandates and to "recommend temporary suspension or permanent repeal of such mandates as appropriate."

The five members of the task force hail from Virginia Beach, Fairfax County, Fluvanna County, the city of Lynchburg and the Falls Church City School Board.
