GHS senior Kayne Boyer earns regional B&G Club award

Kudos to Gloucester High School senior Kane Boyer who earned the Boys & Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula 2013 Youth of the Year award earlier this month.

Boyer received the award at the group's annual board meeting. Boyer has been a member of the club since 2005 and at the annual meeting spoke about what the club has meant to him, said a spokeswoman for the organization.

Boyer credited Boys & Girls Club of Gloucester Director Gary Rippel as being an important person in his life, the spokeswoman said. Rippel described Boyer as "your All-American kid" and a leader with focus and direction for the future, the spokeswoman said.

Boyer plans on attending Liberty University and graduating in June.

As a member of the Gloucester Club, Boyer has taken part in Positive Action classes, SMART Moves classes, Workforce Development classes, and has attended Ripken Baseball Camp as a part of Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Badges for Baseball Program.

Boyer was also selected by the Gloucester Boys & Girls Club and the Kiwanis Club of Gloucester to attend the Kiwanis International Leadership Conference and was invited back to be a student mentor and counselor.

In an essay about his club experience Kayne wrote, “The club gave me opportunities to excel in not only athletic activities, educational activities and prevention classes, but it helped me develop character and leadership skills. The Club taught me how to give back to my community and to the younger youth at the Club.”

The Youth of the Year program has a long history with Boys & Girls Clubs. Each year one youth is selected out of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula’s 15 Clubs and over 5,000 youth to represent our organization at the state level.

Boyer will compete in April for the State Youth of the Year Competition and if he wins he will move on to the Regional Competition later this spring. Winners of these competitions will receive scholarships from Tupperware Brands Corporation.
