Forget that third cup of coffee. Here's a track to give your Friday afternoon a brain-rattling burst of energy. OFF! is a sort of supergroup, but not the boring kind. This is a punk-rock band with velocity, songwriting chops and subversive vision.
Yes, the group -- which features Keith Morris on vocals, Dimitri Coats on guitar, Steven McDonald on bass and Mario Rubalcaba on drums -- has long backstory. Members are drawn from veteran bands including Black Flag, Redd Kross and Rocket From the Crypt. Together, OFF! makes music that's more than the sum of those parts.
Today's track, "King Kong Brigade," isn't the band's most aggressive tune, but it does deliver a dose of the band's trademark snarl. Morris sings the beautifully offensive line, "I wanna club ya like a baby seal, staple your scalp to my steering wheel." A sentiment for a Friday if there ever was one.
[Disclaimer: Sound Check does not endorse violence against baby seals or humans. We do enjoy humorously exaggerated punk-rock lyrics about those subjects, however.]
The tune is the first cut released from the band's self-titled debut album, set for a May 8 release, according to Pitchfork.

Here's a news release about the song and the band's upcoming tour, which does not, unfortunately, include a stop in Virginia.
Hey - OFF! just released the first sampling of their new self-titled record - the mid-album barn stormer "King Kong Brigade". They've also announced a US tour with the recently reunited Refused, inspiring no shortage of jealousy from my inner teenaged self.
