Free Music Friday! A bluegrass track from Steep Canyon Rangers

Feeling a distinctive lack of bluegrass in the Free Music Friday diet, we turned to the folks at Rebel Records. Based in Charlottesville and now partnered with County Sales in Floyd, the company has been pumping out string band recordings since 1959.

Many of the biggest names in bluegrass -- Country Gentlemen, Ralph Stanley, The Seldom Scene, Del McCoury, Keith Whitley & Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Red Allen, IIIrd Tyme Out and the Lonesome River Band -- have recorded for the label.

Today's free track comes from some relative new kids on the block. Steep Canyon Rangers have been recording for 10 years, after coming together as students at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

They've recently gained a new high profile because comedian Steve Martin tapped them to be his backing band. Earlier this year, Martin and the Rangers released a collaborative album, "Rare Bird Alert" on the Rounder Records label.

Your Free Music Friday selection comes from an earlier disc, 2009's "Deep in the Shade." It's all yours thanks to the good folks at Rebel.
