Oyster float workshop. The registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 5, for an upcoming oyster float-building workshop at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point.

The Tidewater Master Oyster Gardeners Association will teach the public how to grow oysters to eat and sponsors a float-building workshop 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Aquaculture Center at VIMS. The event also features float repair stations; how-to oyster garden information and supplies, including spats and ready-made floats. Master oyster gardeners will be on hand to answer questions. No experience necessary, free admission.

•Free lawn clinic. 10 a.m.-noon. Saturday, Sept. 6. Fall is the best season to renovate a fescue lawn. The York County/Poquoson office of Virginia Cooperative Extension will be offering free lawn maintenance clinics this fall. Incorporating organic matter, rake level and seed selection will be discussed. The clinic is at the Ken Matthews Garden Center, on Route 17 in the Grafton area of York County. Pre-register by calling 890-4940.

Horticultural Society meeting. Brent Heath of Brent and Becky's Bulbs will be the keynote speaker for the Hampton Roads Horticultural Society's Thursday, Sept. 11 meeting. "Let's Have a Plant Orgy with Flower Bulbs" is the topic of his 7 p.m. presentation.

The meeting, at the Newport News Women's Club, 461 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., is free and open to the public.
