Hampton is offering a free Preparedness Day Workshop on Saturday, May 31 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Northampton Community Center, 1435-A Todds Lane.
Workshop participants will learn about food and water safety, home safety, first aid and hygiene, fraud and home security, planning documents and readiness kits, according to a flier from the Hampton Emergency Management Office.
Although the session is free, pre-registration is required by calling 727-8311 or going online to http://www.hampton.gov/preparedness.
Environmental expo in Hampton
Learn about citizen impact on the environment at the Hampton Crabtown Environmental Expo on Saturday, June 7.
The free event at Sandy Bottom Nature Park, 1255 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, runs from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and is open to the public. The day's focus is on storm water pollution, landscape solutions, wetlands restoration, sea level rise, Virginia's Deep-Sea red crab, oysters, and urban life at the edge the Chesapeake Bay, according to a release from the Virginia Cooperative Extension.
Exhibitors include the Tidewater Oyster Gardening Association, Hampton Clean City Commission, Hampton Roads Solar Group, Hampton Master Gardeners, Peninsula Master Naturalists and others. Activities for the day include workshops and exhibits about citizen influence on wetlands, water quality, and seafood of the Chesapeake Bay, the release said. In addition, there will be vendors, door prizes, food and activities for children and pets.

Nature buffer zone dedicated
Students at Booker T. Washington Middle School in Newport News helped create a buffer zone at Abernathy Park in the Causey's Mill area, according to a news release from the city.
That buffer zone will be dedicated Monday, June 9 at 10 a.m.
The students worked under the direction of Newport News Master Gardeners and the city's Parks Facilities Maintenance and Landscape Services, Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department, according to the release.
The nature buffer area is at Abernathy Park, at the Warwick Boulevard entrance to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. For more information, call 757-591-4838.
