It's been a happy Monday when it comes to concert announcements. It's starting to look like a logjam has been broken.
Live Nation and WNOR-FM (98.7) said that the Lunatic Luau hard rock festival will return May 4 with a lineup including Shinedown and Slash. Meanwhile, folks at the nTelos Pavilion in Portsmouth unveiled plans for concerts featuring Steve Winwood and Merle Haggard.
Tickets to all three concerts go on sale this weekend.

Portsmouth, Va. – Steve Winwood headlines in concert at nTelos Wireless Pavilion on Tuesday, May 22. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the concert begins at 8 p.m.
Winwood is one of the most enduring artists in the history of music. He was inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll as a member of Traffic in 2004. Rolling Stone Magazine named him #33 in its “100 Greatest Singers of All Time” in 2008. In 1986 he earned two Grammy Awards: for Record of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Higher Love.” Also in 2008, Winwood received an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music to add to his honorary degree from Aston University, Birmingham.
In addition to Winwood’s work in Traffic and as a solo artist, he was a member of Blind Faith and continues to tour worldwide, frequently trading lead guitar roles with Eric Clapton who also was in that band. Winwood’s career started in the mid-60s as a teenager singing for Spencer Davis Group on the classic R&;B-influenced rockers “I’m A Man” and “Gimme Some Lovin’.”
He is credited for studio contributions on multiple landmark recordings by Jimi Hendrix (“Electric Ladyland”), Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, James Brown, Muddy Waters, Phil Collins, and Christina Aguilera, among dozens of others.

Hall of Fame Members Appear in Portsmouth Sunday, July 29
Kristofferson, one of the original “Outlaw Country” artists, is known for such hits as ";Me and Bobby McGee,"; ";For the Good Times,"; ";Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down,"; and ";Help Me Make It Through the Night."; In addition to his success as a recording artist, more than 500 others have recorded his songs. He has three Grammy Awards and 27 albums to his credit and has appeared in more than 70 major films.
Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985.
Merle Haggard also is a charter member of the “Outlaw Country” artist movement. With his band The Strangers he helped create the Bakersfield sound, characterized by the unique twang of Fender Telecaster and the unique mix with the traditional country steel guitar sound, New vocal harmony styles were sung, in which the words are minimal, with a rough edge not heard on the more polished Nashville Sound recordings of the same era.
Haggard was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Grammy Awards Hall of Fame in 1999. He has earned 48 BMI Country Awards, nine BMI Pop Awards, a BMI R&;B Award, and 16 BMI ";Million-Air"; awards, all from a catalog of songs that adds up to more than 25 million performances. Haggard accepted the prestigious award for lifetime achievement and ";outstanding contribution to American culture"; from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Dec. 4, 2010, and at the gala in Washington, D.C., he was honored with musical performances by Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, Jamey Johnson, Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert and Brad Paisley. This tribute was featured in 2010 CBS telecast of the Kennedy Center Honors.
