CNU freshman was among youngest RNC delegates

NEWPORT NEWS — Christopher Newport University freshman Emma Grace Byler was among the youngest delegates at last week’s Republican National Convention.

The 18-year-old went to Florida on Aug.27 after attending a few classes in Newport News, said her father, Gary Byler. He is a member of CNU’s Board of Visitors and the 2nd Congressional District GOP chairman.

Emma Grace Byler, who plans to major in American studies, said it was a tough decision to miss her first week at CNU but worth the experience. She’s back playing catch-up with her five classes.

“Politics have always been a part of my life,” Byler said. “I’ve never known anything different. I decided it was my turn to step up to the plate.”

Being a first-time delegate at 18 was empowering, she said, because it put her on the same level as even the most seasoned delegates.

“I was excited about it before, but when I was actually on the floor with my delegate badge I mattered as much as everyone else on the floor,” Byler said. “Even at my age, I had a say in this.”
