The 3rd Massachusetts Volunteers

The 3rd Massachusetts Volunteers were among the critical Union reinforcements who arrived at Fort Monroe on April 20, 1861. Just hours later, 350 of its men stepped back aboard the USS Pawnee for an unsuccessful attempt to relieve the Union sailors at the Gosport Navy Yard in Portsmouth
