The Civil War Hospitals at Fort Monroe

This period lithograph shows the vast expense of the Union hospital complex in Hampton, including the stately Chesapeake Military Hospital for officers at the right and the sprawling triangle of the Hampton Military Hospital for enlisted men on the left. Combined with hundreds of hospital tents, these structures could muster from 3,500 to 5,000 beds, making it the second largest facility in the Union hospital system.
