Newport News-based Basic Construction is the apparent low bidder on a project to widen T.C. Walker Road and make improvements to its intersection with Route 17 in work connected to building the new Page Middle School.
Basic Construction submitted a bid of $920,271 that was opened on Tuesday, county documents show. Two other firms submitted higher bids.
Basic Construction had submitted in August the low bid of $742,428 in the original round of bidding on the project. But the project had to be put out to bid again after design changes were required by the Virginia Department of Transportation, said Bill Lindsey, Gloucester County purchasing agent.
Work will include adding turn lanes on T.C. Walker Road and Route 17 and adding a traffic light. Half of the cost of the project are expected to be paid by VDOT through a grant.
