Rory Lee, sr., running back, Thornton, 5-9, 175. Top back in state with more than 2,100 yards rushing and 34 TDs this year. Returned 5 kicks and 1 punt for TDs. Has a combined 3,328 yards total offense.
Alex Rodriguez, sr., running back, Lane Tech, 6-1, 205. Durable back gained more than 2,000 yards with 25 TDs to lead Indians into Class 6A quarterfinals. Rushed for 292 yards on 43 carries against Young.
Kenneth Dunn, sr., wide receiver, East St. Louis, 5-11, 180. Big-play receiver for unbeaten state champions with 54 receptions, 1,180 yards and 17 TDs. Averaged more than 21 yards per catch for Flyers.
Mike Griffin, sr., wide receiver, Julian, 5-11, 175. Blossomed in senior year after transferring from Mt. Carmel with 63 catches for 1,254 yards, 13 TDs. More than 1,500 receiving yards, 89 catches in two years.
Todd Baczek, sr., lineman, Carmel, 6-4, 250. Guard on No. 1 scoring offense in northwest suburbs. Two-time All-East Suburban Catholic pick. Coach Mike Fitzgibbons: "Extraordinarily quick for a guard."
Doyle Cockrell, sr., lineman, Evanston, 6-4, 245. Only two-way starter for 9-2 Wildkits, whose quarterback was sacked only twice in '89. All-conference Central Suburban South. Coach John Riehle: "Impact player."
Joel Gesky, sr., lineman, Marist, 6-4, 260. Three-year starter for Redskins and all-conference pick in ESCC. Coach Tony Pietrzak: "Can make adjustments to any alignment."
Richard Huddleston, sr., lineman, East St. Louis, 6-0, 273. A Tribune second-team all-state pick as junior. Center for high-powered offense that averaged more than 360 yards per game.
Kaylan Kennel, sr., lineman, Belleville East, 6-3, 280. Two-way standout being recruited by top schools as offensive lineman. One of best in St. Louis area. Coach Mike McGinnis: "Outstanding long drive blocker."
Mike Balog, sr., lineman, St. Patrick, 6-2, 220. All-East Suburban Catholic pick recorded 48 solo tackles, 47 assists, 2 sacks. Combined with 6-4, 250-pound Jonathan Kerr for imposing line.
Brian Hamilton, sr., lineman, St. Rita, 6-5, 235. Two-time Tribune all-state selection. Defensive leader on team with 20-2 record last two years. Co-MVP of Catholic League with 14 sacks, 11 deflected passes, 2 blocked punts.
Doug Winter, sr., lineman, Maine South, 6-5, 225. All-Central Suburban South pick led Hawks defense during 9-2 season. Exceptional speed for his size with 4.85 in 40.
Bryant Young, sr., lineman, Bloom, 6-4, 245. Three-year starter and two-time all SICA East pick. Recorded 56 solo tackles, 9 sacks. Standout in wrestling, track as well.
Pete Bercich, sr., linebacker, Providence, 6-3, 228. Two-way star for Celtics was in on 124 tackles. Picked off three passes and had three fumble recoveries. Started as sophomore on state championship team. Coach Matt Senffner: "Best player I've coached in 24 years."
Oliver Gibson, sr., linebacker, Romeoville, 6-3, 235. Second-team all-state selection by Tribune as junior. Averaged 8 solos, 10 assists per game. Coach Bill Wienke: "Can totally dominate game from his middle linebacker position."
Dana Howard, sr., linebacker, East St. Louis, 6-2, 255. Leader of defense that allowed only 51 rushing yards per game. Rotates between line and LB slot depending on opposing defense.
Steve Ostrowski, sr., linebacker, Joliet Catholic, 6-1, 210. Focal point of defense that posted seven shutouts. Makes up in aggresiveness what he lacks in size. East Suburban Catholic Defensive Player of Year.
John Newton, sr., defensive back, Richards, 5-11, 186. Lone two-year starter on two-time 4A champs with 28-game win streak. Two-way star had 10 interceptions, 44 solo tackles, 14 knockdowns, 6 sacks from safety position. Also caught TD pass in state title game.
Matt Kraus, sr., defensive back, Barrington, 6-2, 190. All-Mid-Suburban North selection with more than 50 tackles, 6 interceptions and 5 forced fumbles for 7-3 Broncos.
Mike Wright, sr., defensive back, Morris, 5-11, 170. Tied school record with 15 interceptions on defense that posted seven shutouts, totalled 32 picks and allowed only about 70 passing yards per game in '89.
