Time ran out before Billy Garrett Jr. got a shot at forcing overtime the last time.
Garrett and Morgan Park made the most of their second chance.
Garrett's driving layup over Russell Woods with 10 seconds left in overtime was the difference as No. 2 Morgan Park turned the tables on No. 1 Simeon with an action-packed 54-53 victory in a Public League semifinal Wednesday night at Chicago State.
Simeon, a 53-51 winner in the first meeting Jan. 16, had not lost to a Public League team since Young beat the Wolverines 64-50 in the city semifinals on Feb. 16, 2011.
"That bit at me since Jan. 16," Garrett said. "I knew if we had a chance to do it again I wanted to finish it. No better way to get to the championship than to get by them. We'll celebrate tonight and then put it behind us and come back and win the whole thing.
"It's a great win. Simeon is a great team."
Morgan Park's Kyle Davis led all scorers with 15 points, while Markee Williams had 12 and Garrett 11 for Morgan Park (26-2), which will be after its second city title in four years Friday night against No. 4 Young.
The Mustangs scored the game's first nine points and led until Woods scored the final points of regulation on a putback with 1 minute, 5 seconds remaining.
Simeon (22-3) scored the first bucket of overtime to take its first lead, and the Wolverines went up again on a steal and layup by Jaylon Tate with 20 seconds showing.
Morgan Park called a timeout, and Josh Cunningham found a streaking Garrett for the winner. Simeon had one last chance on a baseline out-of-bounds play with .9 seconds left, but Jabari Parker (14 points) misfired on a turnaround jumper.
"There wasn't much difference from last time, but they made a play down the stretch," Simeon coach Robert Smith said. "I like the effort in the second half. We played terrible in the first half. For me it is not a big issue.
"We've just got to get back and refocus. We are not sharing the ball. Once we get back to sharing the ball, we'll be fine. We've got so many players, and everyone wants to be that person. I'm the coach, so I have to get that corrected."
