Tinley Park police station closes after resident turns in grenade

Tinley Park closed the police station lobby for three hours last week after a resident dropped off a hand grenade her 8-year-old son had found on the 17900 block of Sayre Avenue, according to a police report.

The resident of the 6500 block of Pine Point Drive brought the explosive device into the station about 4 p.m., Nov. 21 saying she initially thought it was fake, but began taking it seriously after talking to a friend with military experience, the report said.

Police closed off their south parking lot and lobby at 7850 W. 183rd Street and contacted the Cook County bomb squad, which disposed of the device after determining it was real, but incapable of exploding.
