2010 Chicagoland farmers markets

Once again area residents can find the fruits of the Midwest in farmers markets throughout the city and suburbs. Most are opening this month.

Farmers and vendors from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan will bring produce, baked goods, cheese, flowers, honey, jam, nuts and plants.

This year marks the 31st anniversary of the Chicago Farmers Markets, presented by the Mayor's Office of Special Events and Country Financial and sponsored in part by the Chicago Tribune.

New Chicago market vendors this year include Geneva Lakes Produce from Wisconsin at the Prudential Plaza market, Big Head Farm from Michigan at the Southport Market, Farm Fresh Farms co-op of Illinois at the Daley Center, Uptown and Lincoln Park markets and Morris Farms of Indiana at the Hyde Park market.

For the first time, ready-to-eat crepes will be sold at the Daley Center, Division Street, Erie Street and Lincoln Square markets. Spencer Foods also will be making handmade, English-style bangers or sausages served hot in buns or sold raw to take home at the Wicker Park and Lincoln Park markets.

Also new this year, Link cards, used by recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, will be accepted at the following markets on the following days of the week: Tuesdays at Lincoln Square; Wednesdays at South Shore Bank; Thursdays on Daley Plaza; Saturdays at Division Street; and Sundays at the Beverly market.
