Fun things to do in Highland Park and Deerfield for the weekend of May 9.
Nine artists, six studios
"The Artists at 3150" can be described as a community of artists working in the same place on various art forms. Beginning at 3 p.m. on May 9, nine artists in six studios will showcase their creations in an exhibit, art sale and open house. An array of paintings, sculptures, mixed media and photography will be displayed in a courtyard setting equipped with refreshments. This event is free to the public. The Artists at 3150 is located at 3150 Skokie Valley Road in Highland Park. For more information, call (847) 840-0527.
Support the cause
The time of year approaches for the annual Family Service fundraiser, "A Show of Support." Family Service, a provider of senior and caregiver services, teen counseling and Latino education, will hold its event starting at 7 p.m. on May 10 at the Gorton Community Center. The night kicks off with a silent auction, wine and hors d'oeuvres before master illusionist Jason Bishop takes the stage at 8:30 p.m. Family Service works in 62 communities including Highland Park, Deerfield and Highwood. Tickets are $125. The Gorton Community Center is located at 400 E. Illinois Road at McKinley in Lake Forest. For more information, call (847) 234-4282.
There's no need to travel to Southeast Asia to catch a glimpse of the historic Vietnamese landscape. Artist David E. Dallison spent five months traveling the countryside, creating watercolor paintings of his surroundings and its local population. The Art Center Highland Park will display Dallison's work starting at 8 a.m. on May 12 through 5 p.m. July 12. The Art Center is located at 1957 Sheridan Road. For details, call (847) 432-1888.
A Norton's homecoming
There was a time when Norton's Restaurant in Highland Park served its signature food and drinks sans live music. But owners will soon welcome back one of their first live acts, The Usual Suspects, at 9:30 p.m. on May 10. Once the band plugs in, they'll be playing covers from The Beatles, The Who, Bruce Springsteen and many more. Norton's Restaurant is located at 1905 Sheridan Road in Highland Park.
