The Book Club at Victory Centre
Members of the club are senior citizens of the Victory Centre at Park Forest, an independent living residence. We come from varied backgrounds and geographic areas of the U.S. Although we have diverse opinions, we all are avid readers who are seeking to enhance our knowledge and literacy skills.
We discuss the book for about 45 minutes, then break to have refreshments. In September and May we go out to dinner after our discussion.
Each month we celebrate birthdays and have a gift raffle related to the book we are discussing.
Books we've enjoyed: "The Measure of a Man" by Sidney Poitier, "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd, "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger, "Can't Wait to Get to Heaven" by Fannie Flagg and "The Shack" by William P. Young
A favorite: "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. We enjoyed it because it addressed important issues and was true to life.
A book we didn't like: "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant. The book had too many characters that made it confusing to keep track of the storyline.
We tend to have time constraints and illnesses that cause us not to finish a book. We're aiming to discipline ourselves more to finish book selections.
We'd like to meet Kathryn Stockett. Her portrayal of the characters and time period really kept our interest in reading the book. We are eager to know when her next book is going to be published.
Authors we've met: Amy Peele ("Aunt Mary's Guide to Raising Children the Old-Fashioned Way) and Troas Alexander ("A Cat's Tale")
Next up: "The Pelican Brief" by John Grisham
