Our club has been meeting for almost 50 years, and we still have one founding member attending our meetings.
We meet nine times a year. Before our meeting in May, members submit book suggestions for the following year. The suggestions are compiled into a list and voted on. The nine titles receiving the highest number of votes become our reading list for the year.
We'd like to meet Ann Patchett because she crafts very believable characters and is an engaging public speaker. We would like to ask her how she develops ideas for her novels.
We had an interesting discussion on "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Her description of life as a Muslim woman was fascinating, as were her courage and determination to lead a different life.
Four books we've loved: "Bel Canto" by Ann Patchett, "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, "The Namesake" by Jhumpa Lahiri and "A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry.
Our next book is "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" by Helen Simonson. We chose this book based on the overwhelmingly enthusiastic reviews it received.
