The Morningside Square book club

LiteratureAbraham Lincoln

Our group was started  in 2004 as a cultural activity for the women living in the recently completed Morningside Square Condominiums in Downers Grove.

We meet the first Thursday of the month from September through June.

Every fall we select the next year's reading list using club member suggestions. We try to choose a variety of genres, including fiction, nonfiction, biography, poetry and occasionally a children's book.

One favorite book:  "My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey" by Jill Bolte Taylor. We were impressed by the unique way she conveyed her recovery from a massive stroke.

We also liked: "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls, "John Adams" by David McCullough, "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant, and "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln" by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

We plan to read: "The Female Brain" by Louann Brizendine "and "Cleopatra: A Life" by Stacy Schiff.
