"Africa: West with the Night" by Beryl Markham

A fantastic memoir of one of the first mail pilots in Africa in the early part of the 20th century. She talks about growing up on a coffee plantation, flying supplies to miners and farmers, running hunters out for safaris, and eventually becoming the first person to fly west across the Atlantic from Europe to North America. Great stuff. My folks went on a safari and were given a Hemingway book to read. I gave them this, and they told me it kicked Papa's a**. -- Sarah Jersild
