Michigan scored three times in the bottom of the seventh and defeated Illinois 5-2 Thursday night in the Big Ten tournament at Ann Arbor, Mich.
The loss drops the fourth-seeded Illini into an elimination game at 11 a.m. Friday against Indiana. The winner will stay on the field to face Penn State in another elimination game.
Kyle Hudson's RBI single gave Illinois a 1-0 lead in the fifth, and Dominic Altobelli's run-scoring base hit put the Illini up 2-1 in the top of the seventh. But they couldn't hold on against the tournament host Wolverines, ranked 17th in the country. Daniel Webb had two of Illinois' six hits.
Earlier, Dan Black slugged two homers and drove in six runs to lead second-seeded Purdue to a 15-6 rout of No. 3 Penn State. And sixth-seeded Indiana eliminated No. 5 Ohio State 10-8 by putting up two runs in the 10th inning.
Top-seeded Illinois-Chicago overcame a two-run deficit by scoring five runs in the seventh to beat Valparaiso 8-5 at Niles, Ohio.
Trailing 4-2, the Flames scored five two-out runs on a wild pitch, a hit batsman, an infield single, a bunt and an error. Jason Ganek went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Dan DeBruin lead Valpo, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
The Flames will face Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the winners bracket at 6 p.m. Friday. The Crusaders must beat Cleveland State at 10 a.m. or be out of the tournament.
Host and top-seeded Wichita State hammered Southern Illinois 12-0. The Shockers ripped starter Shawn Joy, who had shut them out in regular-season play, for nine runs on 13 hits in five innings.
The fifth-seeded Salukis will face No. 3 Creighton in an elimination game at 11 a.m. Friday.
Top-seeded Kent State knocked No. 4 Northern Illinois into the losers bracket with a 10-6 victory in Chillicothe, Ohio. The Huskies got two hits apiece from Anthony Maziur, Dave Reynolds and Pat Minogue and two RBIs from Danny Reed.
They'll have a rematch with Ball State at 11:30 a.m. Friday. NIU dusted the Cardinals 13-7 in the first round.
Eastern Illinois posted its second straight win at the tournament in Paducah, Ky., rallying for four runs in the ninth to beat second-seeded Samford 8-4. Jordan Tokarz's three-run triple was the big blow. Tristan Facer hit a solo homer earlier.
The fourth-seeded Panthers will face top-seeded Jacksonville State, which came up with three runs in the bottom of the ninth to edge Southeast Missouri State 7-6.
Cole Waddell's three-run triple sparked a seven-run fourth inning that carried Western Illinois past second-seeded Southern Utah 9-6 at Tulsa, Okla.
