Richard King and his wife Betsy will be moving into their new home currently under construction at Samuel’s Crossing, a By Carrier community in Plainville, in February.

“This will be our last stop,” says King, who has owned five previous homes. “We have one more move after that, but someone else will take care of it,” he quips.

The recently retired couple's custom colonial home is one, he feels, that they will never want to leave. After all, it is not only the couple's dream home modified to perfection with the help of the builder – it also has been designed with possible future needs in mind. There is, for example, a first-floor master bedroom suite and wide hallways to accommodate walkers or wheelchairs if ever needed.

King's as excited as a kid waiting for Christmas. “We've been watching it grow,” he says.

“We've built houses before and generally the contractors are somewhat responsive, but not as congenial or as responsive as the Carriers, and as focused on the overall project,” says King.

This approach, according to Annie Carrier, director of sales and marketing for Samuel's Crossing, stems from a work ethic instilled in her family by her grandparents. “They taught us the value of hard work. That’s their legacy,” she says. Established in 1971 by her uncles Rejean and Yvon Carrier, the company soon added four other brothers, including her father. By Carrier now includes over two dozen second-generation family members in addition to her, as well as a handful of third-generation members – and more to come.

“We build homes as if we’re building them for ourselves,” she says. “When you buy from us, you get the Carriers. It might be that I'm partial, but I think that's special.”

What you also get at Samuel's Crossing – located in Plainville near the Farmington town line – are Carrier signature offerings such as an industry-leading five-year warranty that covers basement and roof leaks, structural defects, plumbing, electrical and interior climate control.

That was a major selling point for homeowner Amy Lynn Thompson, 36, who moved to Samuel's Crossing with her husband Christopher, 33, about three months ago.

“We were getting a brand new home that was turn-key that we customized, as well as peace of mind that we wouldn’t have to worry about things for five years,” says Thompson. “We realized no one could beat that.”

Another major factor was that By Carrier offered the couple a Hubbard Clause that protected them from having to close on the purchase of the new home until they successfully sold their current home.

A third key consideration, she says, “was the energy efficiency By Carrier offers. We reduced our monthly utility bills by half and we doubled our living space! We were thrilled to see the savings.”

By Carrier's “Energy Smart” homes are filled with green features including 2-foot by 6-foot wall stud construction that adds two inches of insulation for an R-19 value to exterior walls, over 98-percent efficient gas furnaces and tankless hot water heaters, Low-E windows, high-efficiency 17 Seer air conditioning, multiple heating and cooling zones, and much more.

Like King, she also lauded the collaborative process with the Carriers. “The process of building was amazing from start to finish,” she says. “We appreciated that By Carrier made us part of the building process every step of the way.”

Samuel's Crossing is currently in its third phase of development. The community will eventually include 116 homes, of which 62 have already been sold. Two homes are available for immediate occupancy starting at $349,000. Wooded lots offer privacy throughout the community.

The homes at Samuel's Crossing offer three to five bedrooms, including optional first-floor master suites. They feature open floor plans, large bedrooms, tiled baths and showers, custom cabinets, granite finishes, stainless steel appliances, hardwood floors, gas fireplaces, and more. Each home also includes a choice of a deck or a patio.

For the Thompsons, it all adds up to a great living experience.

The first time they came to Samuel's Crossing, Thompson says, they were driving through the neighborhood “just to look. We stopped the car and got out and walked around. Then I looked at my husband and said, ‘We're home.’”
