Pros & cons: We really like the Volkswagen Touareg in general. It’s well-appointed and fun to drive. But it’s also really pricey and not terribly fuel efficient for a hybrid. So, if you’re a die-hard VeeDub fan and want something green, you might actually look toward the TDI model. But if you’re looking for a crossover that’s green and a little less pricey, may we recommend the Lexus RX 450h? For Chicago, we do love the all-wheel drive powertrain, standard heated front and rear seats and heated steering wheel.
What’s new: For 2013, the VW Touareg gets some new wheel and trim options; the hybrid model adds LED taillights.
Ride & performance: The Volkswagen Touareg has really nice acceleration for a hybrid, and we really like the seamless transition between gasoline engine and electric-only motor. It comes equipped with a supercharged 3.0-liter, V-6 engine paired with an electric motor, which deliver 380 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque.
Family value: While we love the roomy 5-passenger interior, we’d love to see a third row in this crossover. Regardless, the Touareg Hybrid is a really nice-sized family hauler with plenty of space for people and stuff. Cargo volume: 32.1 cubic-feet behind the second row, with maximum cargo capacity of 64 cubic feet.
Fun factor: The Touareg Hybrid has a 0-to-60-mph time of 6.2 seconds, which isn’t bad for a crossover. So, yeah, there’s a little bit of fun here. We also like fun standard features such as keyless start, navigation and Bluetooth.
Safety: The 2013 VW Touareg comes with driver and front-passenger airbags, side head airbag, rear head airbag, hill-hold assist traction control, stability control, rearview camera and anti-intrusion side door beams.
