Lehigh Valley may not be on the coast, but today's flash-freezing techniques make it possible to serve a seafood platter that tastes like it came out of the sea this morning.
The beauty of hosting a fruits de mer party is that the seafood platter is not only your main course – it's also a show–stopping centerpiece for an Allentown dining room. Other decorative accents can be kept to a minimum and, in an unusual twist for Pennsylvania, should center around sea-life.
If your guest list is larger than eight, a buffet is the best approach for this party. Present the seafood and its accompaniments on a large center table; set up seating for your guests on several small dining tables placed around the room.
To add height and drama to the buffet table, select a serving piece like our Antique Silver Tiered Stand. Its finish captures the warm patina of vintage hotel silver, and each tier is edged with beading. Fill the stand with crushed ice, and layer real seaweed (available at many fish stores) on top. Boil the seaweed in water and lemon juice to remove any bacteria and odor.
Present dipping sauces in whimsical containers like our Scallop Shell Snack Bowls. Carry through the ocean theme with our Silver Shell Salt and Pepper Cellars and Clam Shell Servers, both cast in metal in the beautiful shapes of real shells.
Arrange stacks of white dinner plates on both ends of the buffet table, so that guests can help themselves from either side. Our white Seashore Plates are detailed with raised starfish and shells. Etchings of shells and coral decorate our Blue Shell Salad Plates.
Use accents like our shell chargers to give seating tables a seaside look. They're woven from rattan and outlined with a double layer of seashells.
Layer our Painted Sea Napkins and Table Runners below. Their sea–life portraits were hand painted by our in-house artist and are printed on crisp white cotton.
Make sure to have plenty of crab crackers and seafood forks on hand at each table, and provide bowls for discarding empty shells.
Put a festive finishing touch on the table with our Coral Place Card Holders. The tiny bottles are topped with life–like faux coral and make a great parting gift for your guests.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
