Federal and state nuclear experts will undergo questioning from Illinois' two U.S. senators at a forum in Chicago today.
Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin and Republican colleague Mark Kirk are hosting the public forum this afternoon at the Dirksen Federal Building. They say they want to see if there are any lessons from the nuclear crisis in Japan that can be applied to Illinois.
The state has six nuclear plants with a total of 11 reactors, more than any other state. Exelon Corp. owns the plants and says they're safe.
But the senators and watchdog groups say they're concerned that four reactors in Illinois are almost identical to those involved in Japan's crisis.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Exelon and Argonne National Laboratory will participate in the forum.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
