A 35-year-woman was killed after the car she was driving went into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on with another vehicle in south suburban Matteson, officials said today.
Christine Brown, 35, of the 17000 block of Anthony Avenue in Hazel Crest, was pronounced dead at 10:05 p.m. Monday at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The accident happened on Vollmer Road on an I-57 expressway overpass at about 9:19 p.m., said Matteson Deputy Chief Ken Arvin.
Brown was driving her 2003 Chevy Impala west on the eastbound lane of the two-lane road, Arvin said.
Brown's car then struck head-on a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by a 35-year-old woman. Her injuries weren't life-threatening, Arvin said.
There were no other people in either car.
While police are still investigating the crash and will reconstruct the accident, there is no indication that either excessive speed, drugs or alcohol played a factor, said Arvin.
Police also must determine how Brown managed to get in the wrong lane because there is a median that separates the roadway at the location where the crash occurred, said Arvin.
Separately, another fatal crash occurred in southwest suburban McCook earlier that killed a 60-year-old Summit man.
Anthony Caparelli, of the 6000 block of Archer Road, was pronounced dead at 6:57 a.m. at Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The accident occurred on the 8300 block of Joliet Road in McCook, according to the office. McCook police could not provide any details about the crash.
