Croatia 8, Team USA 2

Croatia 8, Team USA 2: The 2008 Olympic silver medalists from the United States took a risk to return most of that squad -- aging as it was -- for one final run at an elusive gold medal and the title of the best men’s water polo team in the country’s history. The only hardware they left the London Games with was maybe a miniature model of Big Ben. A dreary quarterfinal loss on Aug. 8 began with a 5-0 deficit and got no better, plunging a proud veteran unit into consolation play that was anything but. “It’s a shame, because in this Olympics, we haven’t played to our potential,” center Ryan Bailey said after the loss. “In any game, at any moment.”
