Barbara and Jenna Bush leave the stage, their parents behind them, at one of the inaugural balls in 2001. The girls had been adamantly opposed to their father running for president: It was clear to them that their emancipation from the strictures of living at home would coincide exactly with the arrival of a Secret Service detail to their college dormitories.
