A man and a woman died and another woman was critically injured when car crashed into a steel "L" support column and burst into flames in the West Garfield Park neighborhood this morning, according to authorities.
The crash happened about 4:40 a.m. in the 4500 block of West Lake Street under CTA tracks. A man, age 29, and a woman, age 26, were pronounced dead on the scene later Sunday morning, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office, which was not releasing their identities because family members had not identified their bodies in person at the office yet.
Police said the car hit a "L" column and burst into flames. A spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department said two people died and another was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
The vehicle was believed to have been headed east on Lake when it hit the pole, burst into flames and ejected a woman, said Police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan.
A man and woman who were trapped in the front seats of the vehicle were dead on the scene, police said.
