A Sauk Village man was issued a ticket after his brakes went out and his van crashed through a plate glass window of a clothing store just off North Michigan Avenue this morning when he swerved to avoid pedestrians, police said.
The van hit the store at 140 E. Delaware Place, just east of the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago, about 9 a.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. The driver, John De Leon, 35, of Sauk Village, was cited with striking a fixed object following the crash.
De Leon told police the brakes on his van failed, and he swerved and hit the building to avoid hitting pedestrians, Mirabelli said.
There were no reports of injuries or evacuations, and police did not have to put in place any long-term street closures following the crash, Mirabelli said.
As a precaution, police waited to remove the van from the building until a city Buildings Department inspector confirmed that moving the vehicle would not cause structural damage to the building, Mirabelli said.
De Leon is due in Traffic Court on July 16.
