( Chris Walker, Chicago Tribune ) Ardent abolitionist and martyr in the cause of freedom of the press, Elijah Parish Lovejoy was born Nov. 9, 1802, about three miles from Albion. Because of the strong anti-slavery views expressed in his newspaper, the Alton Observer, a pro-slavery mob in that Illinois town attacked the warehouse in which he had stored a new printing press. They shot Lovejoy to death and destroyed the press. |
