Train hits, kills 'trespasser' near Homewood station

An inbound Metra Electric train is on the move again this afternoon after hitting a pedestrian near the south suburban Homewood station.

The train involved was on its way as of 1:20 p.m., according to passenger Chuck Burke, an editor at the Chicago Tribune. At least one outbound train was also allowed to move as of that time.

Train No. 122 hit the pedestrian as it was pulling into the Homewood station about 12:15 p.m., said Metra spokesman Michael Gillis. The station is located on Ridge Road at Harwood Avenue.

"It was just south of the platform," Gillis said.

According to the Cook County medical examiner's office, the man died. His age was not available.

Authorities on the train announced the train hit a "trespasser who was on the tracks," said Burke.

The parking lot of the Homewood station was taped off, according to Burke.

The train was expected to arrive at Millennium Station at 1:02 p.m., Gillis said.

One outbound train was scheduled to move past the area at 1:11 p.m., but no other trains were immediately impacted, Gillis said.
