Tougher competition leaves Verzbicas behind

Foot speed was not enough for Lukas Verzbicas when he moved up to the top level of triathlon competition Sunday.

Despite the second fastest time in the run phase, Verzbicas finished 32d in the Triathlon World Series event in Kitzbuehel, Austria.

The field included several medal contenders at the upcoming London Olympics.

British Olympian Alistair Brownlee won in 1 hour, 50 minutes, 13 seconds.  Verzbicas, losing about five minutes in the bike phase, clocked 1:56:36.  His 10k time of 30:35 was 44 seconds behind Brownlee's.

Verzbicas, 19, the reigning junior world champion from Palos Hills, had won his professional debuts races at the Pan American Cup and World Cup level in the previous three weeks.
