Tornado assistance available

There are many organizations assisting victims of the tornadoes in central Illinois. Here are a few of the many ways to help:

Red Cross

The American Red Cross has opened shelters in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Red Cross vehicles are also distributing meals and relief supplies and health care is available at emergency aid stations in some areas. The Red Cross is accepting financial donations at and by phone at 1-800-RED CROSS. Text “REDCROSS” to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has sent mobile kitchens and support teams to central Illinois, Grundy and Will Counties and Kokomo and Lafayette, Ind. They are accepting monetary donations online at, by phone at 1-800-SAL-ARMY and by mail. Send checks, made out to the Salvation Army with “November Tornadoes” written in the memo section, to Attn: November Tornadoes, The Salvation Army, 10 W. Algonquin Rd., Des Plaines, IL 60016-6000. You can also contribute by texting “STORM” to 80888 to make a $10 donation.

Northern Illinois Food Bank

The food bank is delivering food, water and supplies to pantries in Grundy County serving areas affected by the tornadoes. They are also assisting the Peoria Area Food Bank, serving the Washington, Ill. area. Donate by visiting, call 630-443-6910 or text “FOOD” to 52000 to give $10. Donors can also mail checks made out to Northern Illinois Food Bank to 273 Dearborn Court, Geneva, IL 60134.

Washington & Central Illinois Tornado Relief & Recovery

The Washington & Central Illinois Tornado Relief & Recovery Facebook page lists other ways to help, including what items are needed, collection sites and volunteer opportunities. It also provides information on services available to victims and volunteers in central Illinois.
