The Hypocrites snag a new Den

The Hypocrites, the longtime off-Loop theater company that has seen strong growth in its national identity, is to take up permanent residence as the anchor tenent of a new 200-seat theater in Wicker Park.

The new theater will be on the currently vacant ground floor of the existing complex of five small theaters known as The Den and located at 1329 N. Milwaukee Ave (the address of the others theaters is 1333 N. Milwaukee).

Developed with the help of the philanthropists Michael and Mona Heath, the new space will be fully flexible and will seat up to 200 patrons, depending on the configuration. It is expected to be ready early this fall, when The Hypocrites is set to stage founder Sean Graney's latest piece, "All Our Tragic." According to managing director Megan Wildebour, The Hypocrites has signed a five-year deal and will have first dibs on dates. The entire Hypocrites season is slated for the new theater.

The new theater, which will be quite large by off-Loop storefront standards and will have use of the bar and lounge space ofThe Den, will be available for rent when The Hypocrites are not in production.
