Stuffing is a Thanksgiving essential almost on-par with the turkey. Still, there’s no one way to make a stuffing. Indeed, the debate is still raging over whether you should pack the bird with stuffing or heat it up in a casserole dish.
In that lack of uniformity, though, lies an opportunity to be creative: You choose the ingredients, you pick the cooking method, you decide the final taste.
Whatever recipe you use, there are easy ways to build flavor. Check out my story “Five Steps to a Better Stuffing,” for a recipe, tips and flavor variations you can use to make a stuffing you’ll remember this Thanksgiving.
Or, simply drive yourself to the nearest White Castle restaurant.
In what has become something of a holiday tradition, the Columbus, Ohio-based burger chain has released its famous turkey stuffing recipe made with 10 White Castle Original Sliders. A fave of “Cravers” for over 20 years, “the recipe originated from a White Castle team member who substituted crumbled burgers for the breadcrumbs,” according to a White Castle press release. Here’s the recipe, which makes about 9 cups of stuffing, enough for a 10- to 12-pound turkey. (A larger bird? Allow one White Castle hamburger for each pound of turkey).
Original White Castle Turkey Stuffing
10 White Castle hamburgers, pickles removed
1 ½ cups diced celery
1 ½ teaspoons coarse ground black pepper
1 ¼ teaspoon each: ground thyme, ground sage
¼ cup chicken broth
1. Tear burgers into small pieces; place in large bowl with celery, thyme, sage and black pepper; toss to combine. Add chicken broth and toss again. Stuff the mixture into the turkey cavity just before roasting.
As an enticement to get T’day cooks to try this stuffing, White Castle will begin offering on Nov. 21 a $1-off coupon for a sack of 10 Sliders. This turkey stuffing coupon will be available through Dec. 31. All White Castle restaurants will also be open on Thanksgiving “to help Cravers with a last-minute urge to make the stuffing or to enjoy any other White Castle treat.”
