The 35-year-old electronic dance music star known for throwing cake into the crowd was performing at the same time as The Killers, Nine Inch Nails and Lana Del Rey. He was concerned he would be playing to a smaller than normal audience, as a result.
“I was really worried going up against (them),” Aoki said over the phone Thursday from Los Angeles. “Before I even got on stage, I thought, ‘Oh man, nobody is going to be there.’ But it was epic. The crowd went all the way to the back. I could not believe a multi-genre festival that isn’t focused around dance music would have so many people supporting the music.
Aoki – who will DJ at UIC Pavilion Oct. 4 – said it also helped that one of his friends was on stage with him.
“Aaron Paul came out on stage and we threw cake togeher,” said Aoki of Paul, known best for his role as Jesse on AMC’s “Breaking Bad.” “I’m pretty sure he hit someone.”
