Big 12

Three days before the Big Ten officially expanded to 12 teams, a source in the television industry told the Tribune's Teddy Greenstein: “I hear it will be Nebraska — and only Nebraska.” Huh? We all had been led to believe that this decision was about “eyeballs” — i.e. extending the reach of the Big Ten Network into populated markets. But the Big Ten did stop at 12 — and now has a powerhouse football conference and league title game worth roughly $22 million per year.Eric Francis, Getty Images
