Sprawling responsibilities

The first word you see on the front page of this newspaper may be Chicago, but some of the most important stories you read here every day happen outside the city limits.

The Tribune has a team of photographers, reporters and editors in three bureaus to cover news where many of our readers live and work: the suburbs.

That team includes reporters with expertise in local government, education, transportation and various topical beats. Other reporters have geographic assignments, writing about clusters of towns from Highland Park to Orland Park, Naperville to Libertyville, and dozens of villages in between.

In 2012, Tribune investigations into rising debt in local government and systematic failures in the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services originated in the suburbs. Suburban reporters and photographers also covered news stories about toll increases, wrongful convictions in Lake County and the high-profile trial of Drew Peterson.

Those highlights barely scratch the surface of the work we do from the Tribune offices in Schaumburg, Westchester and Tinley Park. Please help us make sure your town is represented in our coverage by sending story ideas or suggestions to tips@tribune.com.
