A 28-year-old man died Sunday night after the pickup he was driving struck a trailer truck in the Southwest Side's Brighton Park neighborhood, authorities said.
The crash happened at 10:48 p.m. near the intersection of South Kedzie Avenue and West 43rd Street, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said, citing preliminary information.
The man was brought to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The medical examiner's identified the man as Alexander Ruiz, of the 5600 block of South Keeler Avenue, and said the crash happened in the 4400 block of South Archer Avenue.
Witnesses told police the driver of the Chevrolet pickup was headed northwest on Archer, when he drove through a red light at Kedzie and the pickup collided with the 18-wheel truck, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. The pickup hit the side of the truck, causing the hood of the pickup to come to rest under the rear wheels of the larger truck and fatally injuring the pickup driver.
There was no indication whether alcohol was involved in the crash. No citations were issued to the truck driver, police said.
