At least 8 hurt in overnight violence

At least eight people were injured on the South and West sides in overnight violence, according to police and fire department officials.

Two men were stabbed about 4:30 this morning in the 200 block of South Halsted Street in the Greektown neighborhood on the near West Side, according to Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. Two groups of people, including both males and females, were fighting in an alley in that area, Mirabelli said, and a 29-year-old man was stabbed in the lower back and upper right chest and a 31-year-old man was stabbed in the left armpit and left chest.

The 31-year-old was transported in critical condition to John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital of Cook County, Mirabelli said. No condition was available on the 29-year-old, who was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Two men were shot at 4300 S. Cottage Grove Avenue in the Bronzeville neighborhood while standing outside a party about 2:15 a.m., police said.

One was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memoria and the other in stable condition to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Sean Flynn said. The man at Northwestern, 22, was shot in the back. He's described as being in "guarded" condition by Chicago police. The other man, 28, was shot in the ankle.

That shooting may have been a drive-by, police said, citing early reports.

About 15 minutes earlier, a 25-year-old woman was shot in the face on the 4700 block of South Lake Park Avenue and taken to Jackson Park Hospital, authorities said.

A man in his 20s was shot in the arm at the same location, and the two drove to Jackson Park Hospital, police said. The woman was later transferred to Stroger hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Police are in the early stages of their investigation and aren't able to say what prompted the shootings.

Earlier in the night, a 26-year-old man was shot in the right arm about 11:30 p.m. on the 6800 block of South Prairie Avenue in the Park Manor neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

About the same time, a 20-year-old man was shot on the 5300 block of West Congress Parkway in the South Austin neighborhood. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his hand, police said.

It's unclear what prompted the shootings.
