Mile 326.4

Mile 326.4: The packed excursion boat Theodore Roosevelt heads east under tow toward Lake Michigan under the State Bridge in 1910. The Roosevelt operated between Chicago and Michigan City in the day and made a moonlight lake run in the evening. The passenger boat business boomed until the Eastland rolled over just off the south bank of the Chicago River between Clark and LaSalle Streets in 1915 with 2,752 passengers aboard. More than 800 drowned. The Sanitary District was named as a defendant in early lawsuits, charged with dangerously increasing the flow of the river, but a federal judge determined the current did not cause the accident.
