Rough road home for Stanford's Falls

An injury may spoil Denny Falls’ homecoming.

The Stanford senior from Orland Park made the trip to Chicago for the six-team NCAA Championship at Loyola’s Gentile Arena, where the No. 3 seed Cardinal meet No. 6 Erskine Tuesday night in the first of two play-in games.

But Falls has played just one set in the 11 Stanford matches since injuring his ankle March 9.  His last action came April 12.

Prior to the injury, the Providence Catholic grad had started 14 of the first 19 matches.

In his four years at Stanford, where he is just the second Illinois-bred volleyball player ever, the Cardinal has made two visits to his home state.  Falls was healthy did not play on the other trip, which came during his freshman season.

Lewis University (4) meets Penn State (5) in the other play-in game, with the winner facing No. 1 seed Loyola in Thursday’s second semifinal.  BYU (2) plays the Stanford-Erskine winner in the first semifinal.

The championship match is Saturday night.
