Nhu Lan Saigon Subs takes over Cloud 9 spot and gets to keep the snow ice machine

For those of us who loved the unique and impossibly light Taiwanese snow ice served at Cloud 9 in Lakeview, the closing of the little shop was a big disappointment.

That's why we were so pleased to see snow ice on offer at the new store opening at the 602 W. Belmont Avenue location. Nhu Lan Saigon Subs, an offshoot of Nhu Lan Bakery in Lincoln Square, is going to keep the snow ice machine and serve the dessert alongside its fabulous bahn mi, French-Viet style pastries, iced coffees and bubble teas.

The new location recently telegraphed the good news with a picture of snow ice in the window of the new location that is scheduled to open in mid-March, according to a representative from Nhu Lan bakery. She said the Cloud 9ers left the machine for the new tenants. She also noted that, on opening day, staff will be giving away little red envelopes (like those distributed at Lunar New Year) with coupons for a free future food item.

As a commuter and parent who walks her daughter to school nearby, I had hoped that the sandwich shop would open early serving flaky pastries and strong hot coffee. Sadly, the Nhu Lan staffers, so far, say it probably won't open until 10 a.m.

The exact opening date has not yet been determined but bakery staff say to keep an eye on the window for details.
