Randy Wells cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Tripl-A Iowa, the Cubs announced Friday.
Wells had been designated for assignment, but no team picked him up. He was 1-2 with a 5.34 earned-run average in 12 games, four of them starts.
Tuesday will be the first time the Cubs will need a starter in Wells' vacated spot. Manager Dale Sveum said either Casey Coleman, who is in the bullpen, or Chris Volstad who pitching at Iowa were, the choices.
Volstad is 2-3 with s 4.44 ERA in eight starts at Iowa after beginning the season with the Cubs.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
