Don Watanabe, 76, is Japanese-American, but for the first five years of his life while growing up in the Austin neighborhood, he believed he was white like his foster parents. His life changed in 1941 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and he began to face discrimination at school. Years later, similar experiences aligned him with Chicago's civil rights movement. He lives in South Shore and most recently has been involved in the Occupy Wall Street movement.
