After becoming a starter in his first year on varsity, Sandburg soccer player Patrick Russell hopes he can help his team keep the momentum going. In last year’s playoffs, Russell and the Eagles reached the state semifinals and won the consolation match against Stevenson to take third place.
“This year’s senior class already looks up to Patrick as a natural leader on and off the field,” head coach Desi Vuillaume said. “If we hope to repeat our success from last year it will be with the help of Patrick leading our defensive line.”

How long have you played soccer? 10 years.
What do you love most about soccer?
The team aspect. It’s really fun to spend a whole season with these guys.
What are your goals for the upcoming season? How will you achieve them?
Coming off the season we had last year, the ultimate goal would be to make it state again. For now, we’ll just take the season one day at a time and see where it takes us.
How do you motivate yourself to train during the summer?
I find it enjoyable to just play with some friends so that doesn’t really require any motivation. As far as fitness goes, I just see it as an investment to prevent heat stroke in preseason.
Who has inspired you most in your athletic endeavors?
My dad and brother.
If you didn’t play soccer, what would you be doing?
Hopefully some other sport. I’m bored to tears when soccer isn’t going on.
What’s the best part about summer in Orland Park?
Being able to see just about anyone I want whenever I want is definitely a perk.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Michael Bradley [American soccer player for AS Roma]. He’s definitely one of my favorite guys to watch on the U.S. National team. He’s a hard worker and I really like the way he carries himself on and off the field.
How do you beat the heat during workouts?
Lots of water and Gatorade.
